SCHENGEN SHORT-STAY VISA
Schengen Tourist Visa from India
Prepare for a short-stay Schengen application with a practical overview of where to apply, documents and travel planning.
Where should you apply?
For a multi-country trip, apply through the consulate of the country that is your main destination by purpose or length of stay. If no main destination can be determined, the first country of entry may determine the responsible consulate. Confirm the rule and local appointment procedure with the official consulate or visa centre.
Common preparation checklist
- Valid passport meeting the current Schengen validity rules.
- Completed application form and compliant photograph.
- Travel medical insurance meeting Schengen requirements.
- Itinerary and accommodation evidence.
- Evidence of sufficient financial means and trip purpose.
- Evidence relevant to your intention to leave before the permitted stay ends.
- Appointment and biometrics, unless an applicable exemption applies.
Consulates may request additional documents depending on the applicant and purpose.
Stay limits and timing
A short-stay Schengen visa generally permits stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, subject to the visa validity and conditions. The normal decision period is commonly 15 calendar days, but it can be extended in individual cases. Apply early and check current consulate instructions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying to the wrong country for a multi-country itinerary.
- Insurance dates or coverage that do not match the trip requirements.
- Unclear funding, itinerary or accommodation evidence.
- Assuming a multiple-entry visa means unlimited stays.
